Webinar Recap: MasterSeries to IDEA StatiCa Link for Advanced Steel Connection Design

Posted on in MasterFrame

Why This Integration Matters

Structural engineers often rely on MasterSeries’ Connections Module to design standard connections efficiently, based on SCI Green Books. However, some connection configurations go beyond the scope of these templates. This is where IDEA StatiCa steps in, offering advanced analysis capabilities for non-standard and complex steel joints.

The new link eliminates the need for double modelling, manual force input, and disconnected workflows. It introduces a seamless data exchange between MasterSeries and IDEA StatiCa via Checkbot, enabling more accurate and efficient design.

Project Demonstration: Repurposing an Agricultural Barn

The webinar features a customer project carryed out by Subteno Engineering Consultants, involving the conversion of an old agricultural barn into a production facility. Using MasterSeries, the design team:

- Modelled both the existing and proposed structures in MasterFrame 3D
- Applied roof diaphragm effects and extensions
- Used the Wind Analysis module for realistic loading

Standard baseplates and beam-column connections were designed using MasterSeries’ integrated MasterFrame to Steel Connections link.

More complex connections, such as the bottom chord bracing node as highlighted in the involving multiple members and bolts - were exported to IDEA StatiCa using the new link.

How the Link Works: Step-by-Step Overview

The new IDEA StatiCa export function tool in MasterSeries introduces four key tabs:
- Link Tab: Select IDEA StatiCa directory and define the project directory
- Load Cases Tab: Choose critical load cases (manual or auto-select)
- Member Tab: Choose export method: physical or analytical members (analytical recommended to include internal nodes)
- Export Tab: Decide whether to export only Connections (member-end forces) or Members (full internal forces) for advanced analysis

Users then launch Checkbot, IDEA StatiCa's connection management hub, to finalise and open the exported connections.

Once the model is in Checkbot, users can:
- Review all transferred geometry, loads, and connections
- Automatically group similar joints for faster design
- Use intuitive modelling operations (plates, bolts, cuts)
- Visualise stress, strain, deformation, and bolt/weld utilisation
- Generate Eurocode-compliant reports with custom screenshots

Additionally, users can share 3D views using IDEA StatiCa’s viewer tool for collaborative review.

Real-World Impact: Time and Cost Savings

The integration follows the classic 80/20 rule:
- 80% of standard connections can be handled directly in MasterSeries, quickly and efficiently
The remaining 20% that are more complex now benefit from direct export and advanced analysis in IDEA StatiCa

Example: A project with 50 connections could easily save 8+ hours just by using the link, translating to hundreds of pounds in reduced design time and improved coordination.

Live Q&A Highlights

- The link is one-directional (MasterSeries → IDEA StatiCa)
- Supports class 4 sections (ideal for slender/cold-formed designs)
- New "Update Data" button syncs revised model information from MasterSeries
- Stainless steel design is not yet supported in either platform
- No formal limit on load cases, but processing time depends on model complexity

Conclusion: Smarter Connection Design Starts Here

This new integration between MasterSeries and IDEA StatiCa offers a modern, streamlined workflow that reduces risk, saves time, and enhances design capabilities.

Engineers can now handle the full spectrum of connection types with confidence, using a connected toolset that keeps pace with evolving structural demands.

Existing Users – How to Access the IDEA StatiCa Link

IDEA StatiCa is an independent third-party software application. It integrates with MasterSeries via the MasterCAD: BIM Integration module, similar to our links with Revit, Tekla Structures, and MasterSeries LCA.
Please note that IDEA StatiCa must be purchased separately.

To access the IDEA StatiCa integration within MasterSeries, you'll need:
- Access to the MasterCAD: BIM Integration module
- MasterSeries version 2024.17.15 or later – ensure you've installed the latest patch

How to Get the MasterCAD: BIM Integration Module

-  BIM Integration comes as standard with the Building Design Suite (both Subscription and Perpetual licences)
It can also be purchased as an add-on to the PowerPad Suite

If you’re a custom perpetual user, please contact us at [email protected] or call 028 9036 5950 to discuss your options

How to Update Your Software
